Due to the prevailing economic calamity in the country, with the aim of successfully facing any possible future food crisis, harmonized with the cultivation perception of the Commander of the Army, under the directions and guidance of Director General General Staff Sri Lanka Army Headquarters and Colonel of the Regiment Major General Nishantha Manage, and direct supervision of Regimental Centre Commandant Brigadier Prabath Kodithuwakku, Cultivation and Agronomy Projectcommenced in the VIR Boyagane camp covering an area of almost 12 acres.It is planned to cultivate numerous crops such as Chili, Green Pepper, Brinjal, Lady’s Fingers, Beans, Turkey Berry, Pumpkins, Cantaloupe, Cucumber,Ridged Gourd, Snake Gourd, Potato, Winged Beans, Manyok, Drumstick, June Plums, Kathurumurunga, Lime, Turmeric, Ginger, etc. Cultivation is planned according to short, medium, and long term crops.
All officers and other ranks contribute for this timely important project and the result will be to meet the food requirements of the troops and to produce surplus in case of any difficulty in obtaining raw rations for the troops due to the food crisis in the future. If possible officers and other ranks and even the general public will be provided with the facility of obtaining these harvests at a concessionary rate than that of the market.
As the first phase of this project, under the guidance of Deputy Center Commandant Colonel Dhammika Jayarathne, planting of 750 Brinjal saplings took place on 27 June 2022 in the land prepared with this noble objective in mind.
