VIR INTER BATTALION ATHLETIC MEET BEGINS

Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment Inter Battalion Athletic Meet commenced on 22 February 2021 at Vijayabahu Infantry Regimental Centre Playground, Boyagane under the patronage of Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Major General S P K A Pilapitiya RWP RSP USP, who himself has been a keen sportsman. Brigadier K A W N H Bandaranayake, the Commandant of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest.

Over 450 athletes, representing 19 Battalions belong to VIR will compete in the three-day long tournament.

On arrival, the Chief Guest of the inaugural day was warmly welcomed by the VIR cultural dancing troupe and ushered to the special dais. Afterwards, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment flag was hoisted by Brigadier Nalin Bandaranayake respectively with the VIR Anthem being recited. Subsequently two minutes silence was observed in the memory of Fallen War Heroes.

Ceremonial Opening of the event by the Chief Guest was marked with the opening statement and lighting of the Olympic Torch held by veteran athletes of VIR. Afterwards, the oath of the players and the oath of judges were read respectively.

There are 16 track events, 7 field events and decathlon event scheduled to be continued for next 3 days.
