VIR BIDS FAREWELL TO RETIRING MAJOR GENERAL UPUL WEERAKOON

The Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment bid farewell to retiring Major General U P R Weerakoon WWV RWP RSP VSV USP on 19 March 2023 at the Regimental Centre who were to retire shortly after an illustrious career of more than 34 years in the Sri Lanka Army.

On 19 morning the outgoing senior officer was honoured with a Guard Turnout at the Gate and a customary Guard of Honour by the troops of the regiment, meanwhile Major General Upul Weerakoon showed his respect and gratitude to the “Sound of Silence”, the war heroes monument and the “We Salute”, PWV recipients’ monument.

Bracing an old military tradition, the regiment hosted a Farewell Dinner Night to mark the retirement of Major General Upul Weerakoon along with his spouse, Mrs Sankyani Weerakoon at “The Salute” multifunctional hall, under the direction of Director General General Staff Sri Lanka Army Headquarters, Commander 1 Corps and Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Major General Nishantha Manage.

Members of the Regimental Council and Several senior officers including other officers, along with their spouses, attended the farewell dinner which reached its climax with the presentation of mementos to the day's protagonists in appreciation of the service rendered to the Regiment and the Army as a whole. As a custom, the specially designed token of appreciation was also presented to the outgoing member of the Vijayabahu Seva Vanitha Branch, Mrs Sankyani Weerakoon.
