The 20th Army Novices Athletic Championship drew to a close on 20.03.2019 with new hopes and encouraging records at Sugathadasa Stadium where Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment gained 3rd palce by collecting 85 points amid roars of applause and cheers of the onlookers. This achievement was gained by the regiment for the first time in its prestigious and proud history.
400 plus athletes from various Army regiments vied in the race for championship during 19-20 March, the annual Army event that makes 2 new athletic records that would qualify Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment athletes to enter national/international track and field events. Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment acquired 4 Gold Medals and S/521122 Pte Madusanka RC became the Best Athlete of the tournament.
This year's Army Novices Athletic Championship and 2nd place were grabbed by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps and Gemunu Watch by collecting 139 &134 points respectively.
Major General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Staff graced as the day's Chief Guest. Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Commander SF-East, Major General C.S Atipola, Logistic Commander, Major General L.F Kasthuri arachchi, Deputy Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Fareez Yusuf, Director General Army Band and Performing Arts, Centre Commandants, Deputy Centre Commandant of VIR, senior officers and officers attended this event.
