VIJAYABAHU INFANTRY REGIMENT CELEBRATES ITS 35th ANNIVERSARY

Showcasing glamour and pride on a grand scale, as one of the most prestigious fighting regiments of the Sri Lanka Army, the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment recently celebrated its 35th anniversary with colourful and vibrant ceremony held at the Regimental Centre, Boyagane, in the presence of regimental council members, senior officers, officers and other ranks.

The anniversary arrangements, initiated under the directives of Major General Nalin Bandaranayake USP, Commander, Security Forces – Central and Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, encompassed a range of activities including community outreach projects to strengthen civil-military ties, religious observances to invoke blessings for the regiment, and a grand military parade showcasing discipline and tradition. A highlight of the occasion was the Archers Bravery and Talent Awarding Ceremony, where exceptional soldiers were honored for their courage and skills. The festivities concluded with an all-rank lunch, fostering camaraderie and unity among officers and troops.

The programme commenced with the regiment demonstrating its commitment to community welfare by organizing a special lunch for the residents of Mallawapitiya Elders’ Home and Maliyadeva Boys’ Home on 15 March 2025. Officers and soldiers of the Regimental Centre personally served a delicious meal to the children and elders, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere. The troops spent time interacting with the residents, listening to their stories, and sharing in their cherished memories.

Additionally, a community project was launched to renovate the roof of the cancer ward at the Teaching Hospital – Kurunegala. This commendable initiative took place over five days, from March 11 to 16, 2025, with the participation of troops from the regiment. The effort exemplifies the military’s dedication to supporting local communities and enhancing public infrastructure.

Continuing the 35th Regimental Day observances, a spiritually uplifting overnight ‘Pirith’ chanting ceremony on 18th and 19th March 2025 at the Regimental Centre. The event commenced with a vibrant traditional procession featuring cultural dances and performances, setting a reverent tone for the rituals. The following morning, an almsgiving was offered to the Maha Sangha, who conducted blessings and delivered an ‘Anusasana’ . The chief incumbent venerated the regiment’s storied history, honored the sacrifices of fallen and injured War Heroes, and commended the Army’s unwavering service to the nation. In his blessings, he invoked prosperity for the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and praised its enduring role as guardians of the motherland.

The pinnacle of the 35th Regimental Day celebrations was the grand military parade held on 22 March 2025, graced by Major General Nalin Bandaranayake USP, Commander, Security Forces – Central and Colonel of the Regiment of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, as the Chief Guest. Upon his arrival, he was accorded a ceremonial Guard Turnout at the main entrance, adhering to strict military traditions. Demonstrating deep reverence for the regiment’s legacy, Colonel of the Regiment paid floral tributes at the War Heroes’ and Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV) Recipients’ Monuments, honoring the supreme sacrifices of fallen Vijayabahu warriors.

The ceremony reached its zenith as the Colonel of the Regiment reviewed the impeccably turned-out parade and accepted the Regimental Salute at the parade ground. The Guard of Honour, accompanied by the dignified presence of the Regimental Colours, symbolized the unwavering pride, discipline, and heritage of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment.

The 35th Regimental Day celebrations culminated, Colonel of the Regiment posed for group photographs with the officers and other ranks of the regiment. Following this, as the Colonel of the Regiment, he addressed all the troops before the Archers Bravery and Talent Awards ceremony commenced at the Gymnasium. The regiment honored its exceptional personnel—both officers and other ranks—who had demonstrated extraordinary courage during natural disaster relief operations and excelled in foreign and local training courses. These distinguished individuals received certificates and awards in recognition of their service and excellence.

The day’s commemorative events concluded with an all-ranks lunch held at “The Salute” Multifunctional Hall, bringing the celebrations to a meaningful close.
