The Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, in line with its rich regimental traditions and military formalities, accorded a formal farewell to the outgoing Centre Commandant, Brigadier IGJPK Thilakarathne USP, during a fitting ceremony held on 16 March 2026 at the Regimental Centre, Boyagane, Kurunegala.
The proceedings commenced with the arrival of the outgoing Centre Commandant, Brigadier Jayantha Thilakarathne at the Regimental Centre premises. Colonel MJDB Udapamunuwa RWP RSP USP, Deputy Centre Commandant of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, warmly received the Guest of Honour upon arrival. In accordance with military traditions, a Guard Turnout was accorded to him at the entrance of the Regimental Centre.
Subsequently, paying tribute to the fallen War Heroes of the Regiment, Brigadier Jayantha Thilakarathne laid floral wreaths at the War Heroes Monument and the PWV Monument, honouring the supreme sacrifices made by the brave members of the Regiment.
Marking the occasion, the outgoing Centre Commandant posed for a group photograph with Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers. Thereafter, he addressed the Officers and Other Ranks serving at the Regimental Centre at the Archers’ Cinema Hall. Officers and Other Ranks serving in the battalions of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment also joined the address virtually, enabling them to participate in the occasion. Subsequently, an All Ranks Tea Party was held at the Men’s Club, providing an opportunity for him to share a few thoughts and interact with the gathering.
The day’s proceedings culminated with the departure of Brigadier Jayantha Thilakarathne from the Regimental Centre premises amid the traditional regimental greeting of “Jaya Sri” as all ranks lined up to bid him farewell.
Senior Officers, members of the Regimental Staff and Other Ranks of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment attended the occasion.
