All the Thrills and Spills of the Vijayabahu Motor Cross Watched by Thousands

The pet project of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR)The Vijayabahu Motor Cross at the country\'s most difficult track with fourteen bends, two double jumps and four single jumps, kicked off Sunday (30) morning at Vijayabahu track in Boyagane, Kurunegala before a large gathering of fans, drawn from every corner of the island. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake as the Chief Guest for its inauguration at the invitation of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Jagath Dias, flagged off for its start. The year\'s most exciting and thrilling experience on the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) calendar with 18 events consisted of over 98 renowned veterans in the field of motor racing. Reports confirmed that racing giants, like Ananda Wedisinghe, C Ishan Dissanayake, K.P Aravind (India), Pradeep HK (India), Sameera Premaratne et al vied for the Championship in the motor racing. It was organized in association with the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLRRA). Major racing events included 125 CC armature, 125 CC two stroke racing motorbikes, 125 CC two stroke and 250 CC four stroke motorbike races, open competition, 125 CC street trail, 250 CC street trail, street trail open, racing event for tri-services, over 85 CC Endure, longest jump, veterans’ competition and several other competitions, exclusively for children below 17 years. The winner in the Open Competition received a 3ft tall Colonel of the Regiment Challenging Trophy in addition to cash prizes, presented to each separate category. Tomoya Suzuki from Japan won the Trophy in the open competition category. \'The VIR Motor Cross\' since its inauguration in 2000 has lavishly contributed towards Army welfare and rehabilitation projects, meant for disabled VIR War Heroes, families of fallen War Heroes and all the War Heroes in general. While contributing to popularizing motor cross as a sport in the country, it has endeavored to donate collected funds towards the \'Abhimansala\' projects for rest and recreation of disable War Heroes. That fund was raised from the Vijayabahu Motor Cross - 2010, which was witnessed by thousands of fans and well-wishers. A massive crowd of more than 25,000 spectators and fans witnessed this year\'s spectacle at Boyagane. This year\'s collection of funds is also to be spent on VIR soldiers and the welfare of their families. Colonel of the VIR Regiment, Senior officers and a host of fans attended the event.
