8 VIR CELEBRATES ITS 29TH ANNIVERSARY

8th Battalion the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, celebrated its 29th battalion anniversary on 03 December 2022 at the battalion headquarters in Jeewanagar, Mannar. Giving priority to military traditions, a series of events including religious activities, games and social events were organized on par with the battalion day.

At the outset, alms giving ceremony was held on 01 December 2022 to pay tribute to all the fallen war heroes who have sacrificed their lives during the 29 years of the battalion history. On 03 December 2022, according to the military traditions, a colourful guard turnout was given by the troops to the Commanding Officer, Major GNPR Silva RWP RSP psc, followed by planting of an Iron Wood sapling, troop address by the Commanding Officer, group photograph and an All Ranks lunch. On 04 December 2022, the final match of the Inter Company cricket tournament took place with the intention of enhancing the comradeship, harmony and sportsmanship of Other Ranks.

On 05 December 2022, with the contribution of all ranks of the battalion, a dry ration pack distribution programme was held for 25 needy families in the area. On the invitation of the Commanding Officer, Brigadier WSV Fernando USP IG, the Commander 542 Infantry Brigade graced this occasion as the Chief Guest. Marking the conclusion of the series of events which were held alongside the 29th anniversary, a blood donation programme was held on 06 December 2022 with the participation of the Medical Staff of National Blood Bank - Mannar branch, and around 100 donors including all ranks and civilian staff of the battalion.
