HISTORY OF 4TH BN THE VIJAYABAHU INFANTRY REGIMENT

4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was officially raised on 01st of August 1989 in Kandy under the enactment of GSD/146 on 10th August 1989 by Army Standing Orders.

Initially the 4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was positioned in Kandy and Mataledistricts.It was commanded under Lieutenant Colonel K C J Jayaratne.

4th Battalion theVijayabahu Infantry Regiment was continuously involved in the military operations and was able to achieve much of a significant objective of the operation on 18.05. 2009. During the last phase of the War, the LTTE cadres were to attack the Sri Lanka Army forward defense line through Nandikadal lagoon. This LTTE attempt was successfully defeated solving the destiny of ruthless LTTE members.

During the past 32 years the 4th Battalion theVijayabahu Infantry Regiment contributed to under control the sabotage activities of the anti –government rebels deploying in Kandy and Matale districts gradually expanding the positioning to Kurunegala, Welioya, Sinhapura. Later the Battalion shifted to Irattaperiyakulam Camp, Vavuniya. The heroic War Heroes of the 4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment fought face to face against brutal LTTE terrorists contributing their military versatility to number of operations initiated by the Sri Lanka Government including Green Belt I, II and III Operation Sathjaya I, II and III, Operation Silver Screen, Kinihira IX, Mahavilaru, Operation Sampoor, East Humanitarian Operation and Wanni Humanitarian Operation and secured the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation in such a manner that King Vijayabahu liberated the Island from South Indian invaders in the history. 4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment is the unseen force behind the liberty what the country achieved today.

Killing the LTTE leader VelupillePrabakaran-leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the most deadliest terrorist in the world was the significant victory that the 4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment as well as the Sri Lanka Army ever had marked. During the operations 22 Officers and 452 Other Ranks have sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the Nation.

We cordially remember the all the Officers and Other Ranks who have sacrificed their lives and limbs including the handicapped in our journey towards victory amidst number of difficulties to enable a free and liberal country for all nations to live in harmony as the shining light which cleared our paths and presently the Officers and Other Ranks of the 4th Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment have shined the good name of the Regiment in many areas such as Inter Regiment Sports and the tournaments organised by SFHQs.
