2nd (v) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment established in 12 Nov 1988 in 3 SLLI headquarters at Thisawewa. Lieutenant colonal A Gurusingha was the first commanding officer of the 2 (v) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment. Battalion headquarters in 1988.

At the begging there were 11 officers and 297 other rankers' within the Battalion. They are from 2 SLLI, 5 SLLI ,2 SR, 3 SR, 2GW, 2 GR and SLAPC. In 1989 the battalion was shifted to WELIOYA, SINGHAPURA area. In 23.04.1989 they have done a successful ambush use in the area and killed one terrorist and captured their weapons and other instrument. In 01.09.1989 the Battalion was shifted to IRATTAPARIKULAM camp under 4 BDE. Battalion has conducted several operations to avoid the terrorist activities in the area.
Five soldiers were died due to a terrorist attack in 03.12.1989 and Battalion was successfully overcome the attack which was conducted by the LTTE in10.13.1989 at MANNAR area. During the attack captured large number of dead bodies, weapons and other instruments of the terrorist.
In 01.03.1990 the Battalion has conducted a Battalion training course at Regimental headquarter - PUTTALAM as the first time in the Battalion history. In 21.06.1990 the Bn has to tactically withdraw from the MANNAR area due to heavy attack conducted by the LTTE. Twenty soldiers were died due to the attack. In 26.06.1990 the Bn has to overcome the terrorist attack which is conducted by the LTTE to kill the civilians in VAVUNIYA and NELLUKKULAM area.
S/2H00623 Pte Nimal Siriwardana s was the first soldier of the Bn who awarded by RWP medal. He was able to save his life during the LTTE attack launched to the KOKAVILL tower in 11.07.1990. In 24.10.1990 the first commanding officer of the Bn was retired from the Army and Lieutenant colonel AS Amarasekara was appointed as the new commanding officer of the Bn. In 22.03.1991 Lieutenant LUSP Weerasingha died due to a LTTE attack at SILLAWATURA area. He was the first officer of the Bn who died due to a terrorist attack.
