23 Battalion the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was raised as per the Army order ARO93/2009G/SD/51/4 dated 24.11.2009. The raising of the battalion was held under the Command of Maj K D M L Samaradiwakara RWP RSP psc (O/62012), who was the first Commanding Officer of the 23rd Battalion the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment. 15x375 tps were join for the opening bn.BN was shifted to the present location on 01 January 2010 at Army Camp Panainindam under command to 642 Bde and 64 Div. This was to strengthen the Sri Lanka Army with the objectives of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Island of Sri Lanka which was promulgated by the Military Order on 24th November 2009. The battalion was stationed in Panainindam deployed for active duty in the ODDUSUDAN.
23 Battalion have deployed coy in several locations, Bn HQ, C coy and Comd and Adm Company at Panainindam A coy at 14 mile post, B coy at Ampakaman.
