The 14th Battalion of the Sinha Regiment was formed on 13th December 1996 and Lieutenant Colonel PLTP Jayawardana was appointed as its Commanding Officer.
After being involved in the performance of operational duties in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the Battalion was amalgamated with the 9th Battalion of the Sinha Regiment on 15th June 2000.
Major UAT Hennedige RSP was the Commanding Officer of the Battalion at this stage.
Later, the 14th Battalion was re-established with strength of 20 officers and 365 men on 25th November 2007.
Lieutenant Colonel HEMRBT Hathnagoda RWP RSP was appointed as the Commanding Officer.
On 29th December 2007 the Battalion was placed under command to the 223 Brigade. Thus, the Admin company, Support companyand D company were deployed in Kalyanapura and Athawetunawewa while the C company was deployed in Kiriibbanwewa.
On 4th January 2008 the Battalion operationally commenced being part of the 'Humanitarian Operation' while being deployed at Welioya, Gajabapura. On 17th & 19th April 2008 the troops deployed on the forward defence lines came under heavy enemy fire which subsequently was repulsed with the assistance of troops of the 12 SLLI and 15 SLSR..
On 8th June 2008 having cleared numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) set by the enemy, the Battalion advance to Kokilai.
On 16th December 2008 successfully repulsed an enemy assault. Later fighting their way through Gajabapura reached the town of Otiyamalai on 1st December 2008.
On 15th December 2008 Lieutenant Colonel HEMRBT Hathnagoda RWP RSP handed over command to Major AMC Abeykoon RWP.
On 24th December 2008 the Battalion established complete control in Otiyamale. On 26th December 2008 troops moved on to Nedunkerni where they established their Battalion Headquarter.

On 4th December 2008 while being engaged with the enemy along the Mankulam - Otiyamalai forward defence line the troops rescued a large number of civilians who until then had been kept hostage by the LTTE. The rescued civilians were offered food and water and were moved to safety.
