5th (Volunteer) Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment

On 2nd November 1997, Major JP Kulathnga was appointed as the Commanding Officer.

With the forming of the 224 Brigade the Battalion was placed under same. Attacks on enemy positions forced them to fall back from the area which allowed the Army to have control of the FDL running from Janakapura to Kokkuthodavai and up to Kalyanipura. In October 1999 the LTTE launched 'Operation Unceasing Wave' and commencing 7th November 1999 the Janakapura Detachment was attacked by the LTTE continuously for 5 days. However, the Battalion was able to hold back the terrorists preventing them from breaking through the FDL.

On 1st May 2002, Major JM Nawarathne was appointed as the Commanding Officer.

On 5th April 2005, Major WM Badrakumara was appointed as the Commanding Officer.

On 19th June 2005 headquarters of the Battalion was moved to Mannar and placed under command to the 212 Brigade.

In 2007, the 'Humanitarian Operation' aimed at liberating the area north of Silawathura was launched. The battalion was deployed at Sirinavakkulam on the FDL. With Silawathura being liberated the 58 Division was formed at Mannar.

On 8th February 2008 Major KGPS Perera was appointed as the Commanding Officer.

Later, the Battalion headquarter was shifted to Periyanavakkulam. With the liberation of Adampan the troops marched forward to liberate Wedithalathive. A part of the Battalion was also deployed to secure the Main Supply Route (MSR) leading to Mannar while the rest of the Battalion was deployed to Thirukeshwaram and Illupukadawai FDLs. The Battalion was then moved to Semmanthivu and placed under command to the 215 Brigade and tasked to secure the MSR from the point of the bridge across the Malwathuoya up to Thaladi.

On 9th February 2009 the Battalion was moved to Visuvamadu and placed under command to the 573 Brigade to be deployed to be part of the 'Humanitarian Operation'. Later, the whole Battalion was airlifted from Vishvamadu to Kumalamunai, Mulaithivu within an hour's duration where they were placed under command to the 593 Brigade. Subsequently, the Battalion was deployed on the FDL at Nayaru.

On 9th April 2009 the Battalion was placed under command to the 594 Brigade. With the forming of the 17th, 18th, 19th & 22nd (Volunteer) Battalions of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, some officers and other rankers from the Battalion were transferred to join the new Battalions and a few others were transferred to join Battalions of the Regular Force.

On 17th February 2008 troops were airlifted from Mankulam to Mullaitivu and were placed under command to the 59 Division under Brigadier N Udawatte.
