8th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment

While the 'Operation Riviresa' was on progress the Commanding Officer of the Battalion Major MPHF Jayasooriya handed over duties to the Lieutenant Colonel LKJC Perera RSP on 22nd August 1996 and left the Battalion.

Under the command of the Lieutenant Colonel LKJC Perera RSP the Battalion was established a camp at Thanankilappu and was able to cripple terrorist activities.

On 17th February 1997 the Battalion was redeployed to Vavuniyato be part of 'Operation Edibala'.

On completion of the Operation the Battalion moved to Mannar and was deployed in Uilankulam. In Mannar, the Battalion played an important part in the operations that led to re-taking control of the Madu Church area.

On 13th May 1997 the Battalion joined 'Operation Jayasikurui' as forward strike battalion thus, played a lead role in re-taking control of Omanthai, Periyamadu and Olumadu. The Battalion, during the said Operation on many occasions successfully repulsed attacks launched by the terrorist on own positions. In the successful efforts to re-take control of Mankulam Town and the road leading to Mullaitivu the Battalion lost (killed) 3 officers and 52 other ranks while a total of 324 sustained injuries.

On 01st August 1998 Major DC Keppetiwalana RSP psc was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Battalion.

On 3rd January 2000 Major KDA Weerasinghawas appointed and took over command as the Commanding Officer.

On completion of 'Operation Jayasikuru' the Battalion was deployed to Sampath Nuwara in Welioya.

On 27th May 2000 The Battalion was once again moved to Jaffna. And later was part of 'Operation Kinihira 9' launched on 16th January 2001.

On 27th May 2000 the Battalion was deployed in Kankesanthurai, Jaffna to act as a reserve in countering the LTTE's 'Operation Unceasing Wave(s)'launched aimed at regaining control of the Peninsula.

On 24th January 2001 the Battalion took over the duties of the FDL at Nagarkovil, regarded as a main axis of the terrorists to enter Jaffna. After operating in the area for around 2 years the battalion moved to be deployed on the FDLs at Muhamalai and Colombuthurai.

On 20th March 2003 Major GJL Waduge RWP RSP was appointed as the Commanding Officer.
