3rd (Volunteer) Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment

On 1st January 2001 Lieutenant Colonel WHD Mahanada was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Battalion. While deployed in Welioya, troops of the Battalion engaged in limited operations against the enemy and successfully killed a number of terrorist and recovered arms, ammunition and other military items used by the enemy.

On 27th July 2005 the Battalion moved to Vavuniya and was deployed on the FDL running from Omantai to Mamaduwa. On 11th January 2006 the Battalion was deployed in Point-Pedro and Manthikai in the Jaffna Peninsula and later on 5th May 2006 moved on to Nelliadi.

On 11thAugust 2006 Major IHS Wijesena was appointed as the Commanding Officer (officiating) of the Battalion. Being deployed in the Jaffna Peninsula, in addition to carrying out operational duties, the Battalion was also engaged in numerous activity aimed at the welfare of the residents of the area.

On 10th February 2010 the Battalion moved back to Nuwaraeliya.
As at present the Battalion is engaged in security duties at Pidurutalagala and at Kothmale. Troops are also engaged in work related to the beautification of the Nuwaraeliya Town as well as work related to the government’s primary & secondary schools development project.
