15th (Volunteer) Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment

On 1st January 1997, the Battalion was formed at Alaweddi in the Jaffna Peninsula. While Major DMLB Dissanayake RSP was appointed as its Commanding Officer, its initial strength was made up of 13 officers and 479 other rankers.

While performing duties at Ponnalei, Alaweddi in Jaffna the Battalion experienced a number of attacks by the terrorists which were successfully repulsed. From Jaffna the Battalion was moved to Welioya and placed under command to the 53 Division to be part of 'Operation Jayasikurui' which was launched on 23rd July 1997. Engaged in the operation the Battalion contributed much to the recapture of Nedunkerni.

While performing duties at Nedunkerni, the Battalion continued to take part in operations under the command of the 53 Division.

On 6th October 1998, Major M DharmasenaIlangasinghe was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Battalion.

Engaged in offensive operations the Battalion recaptured Kulavisudan and Oddusudan after which the Battalion was stationed at Kulavisudan.

The LTTE's offensive against the Security Forces which they code named 'Operation Unceasing Wave(s)' mounted attacks on camps on 1st November 1999. Oddusudan too was attacked which forced the Battalion to withdraw to Omanthai.

On 16th November 1999, Major DharmasenaIlangasinghe handed over the command of the Battalion to Major MG Rathnayake took over duties as the Commanding Officer and commanded the Battalion up to 16thJune 2001 after which Lieutenant Colonel HPJ Mayadunne RSP took over command of the Battalion.

On 29th April 2001, two other ranks of the Battalion were killed by terrorists while they were on operational duties at the Omanthai Forward Defence Line.

Following the signing of the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) and the Cease-fire Agreement between the Government and the LTTE the Battalion for the first time underwent Battalion Training first from 7th November to 13th December 2002 and then from 2nd February to 23rd March 2004.

On completion of training, the Battalion was moved to the Forward Defence Line in Welioya. At the same time the Battalion found a permanent home at Helambawewa in Nochchiyagama where the Rear Headquarter of the 15th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment was established while the Tactical Headquarter was deployed in the Forward Defence Line of Welioya.

On 23rd May 2005 the Battalion was placed under command to the 223 Brigade at Kalyanipura, Welioya.

On 29th June 2007 Major JML Jayasundara took over duties as the Commanding Officer.

Deployed in the Mullaitivu jungles in 2008 and placed under command to the 592 Brigade as part of the 'Humanitarian Operation', the Battalion also provided security to Welioya, Ranabahupura, Morawewa, Gajabapura, Otiyamale, Nedunkeni and Oddusudan. During the operations carried out against the enemy, the Battalion recovered a considerable number of weapons. It also suffered the loss of 14 personnel (killed) and 40 soldiers wounded due to enemy action.

Commencing 2nd January 2009 the Battalion was placed under command to the 642 Brigade of the Task Force 4 and deployed at Nedunkerni. On 10th March 2009 the Battalion was placed under command to the 631 Brigade of the Task Force 3 and deployed to Iranamadu. While being based at Iranamadu two rifle companies were attached to the 10th Sri Lanka Light Infantry and deployed to Pudukuduirippu.
