On 23rd January 2005 Later that Major AMSB Athapaththu assumed duties as Commanding Officer.
On instructions from Army Headquarters, the 10th Battalion SLSR changed their 'classic role' from infantry to Mechanized Infantry (MIR). Later, on 12thMarch 2012, the 10SLSR was re-designated as the 2nd MIR.
Lieutenant Colonel AMSB Athapaththu was appointed as the Commanding officer of the 2 MIR.
