10th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment

The 10th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment was formed on 23rd August 1994 at Elephant Pass. 3 officers and 141 men from the 1 SLSR, 3 officers and 120 men from the 4 SLSR, 3 officers and 122 men from the 6 SLSR, 3 officers and 115 men from the 7 SLSR and 3 officers and 99 men from the 8 SLSR released from their respective regiments made up the initial strength of the Battalion.

With its inception Major PK Ganegoda RSP was appointed as the Battalion's Commanding Officer.

While being stationed at Elephant Pass the Battalion was placed under command to the 7th Division and tasked with being the main reserve of the Division. With the aim of enhancing the capabilities of the Battalion in its tasks as the reserve, it raised a team of men specially trained in operating on motor bikes thus making the Battalion response to emergencies more effective.

On 21st March 1994 the Battalion lost (killed) 2 soldiers due to enemy fire making them the Battalions first battle casualties.

In 1995, in addition to being the reserve of the Division, the Battalion was also tasked to secure a Forward Defence Line (FDL) in Elephant Pass and to carry out operations ahead of the defence line in small groups. Both additional tasks were successfully carried out by the Battalion.

On 25thDecember 1996, Major RWWADB Rajaguru RWP RSP took over command of the Battalion.

Battalion was then deployed at Parantan and tasked with securing the FDL. Doing so, the Battalion successfully repulsed a number of enemy attacks launched on the FDL. As a result of enemy activity a section of the FDL held by the 8 GR was vacated. The counter attack led by the Battalion successfully reestablished control of the FDL.

On 12th June 1998 the Battalion was redeployed to Kilinochchi and placed under command to the 541 Brigade. An LTTE attack on 27th & 28th September on Battalions positions September was repulsed with considerable damage to the LTTE. An attempt to infiltrate and attack the 54 Division was also countered and repulsed by the troops of the Battalion. During the entire period the Battalion lost (killed) 3 officers and 121 other rankers while 7 officers and 184 other rankers received injuries.

Later, the Battalion was redeployed to Vettilakerni, amalgamated with the 16 SLSR and placed under command to the 544 Brigade.

On 28th January 2000 MajorJJ Mohotti RSP was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Battalion.

Encounters with the enemy caused a considerable number of deaths and injuries to the Battalions personnel thus, affected the numbers available for operational duty. Hence, the remainder of its cadre were amalgamated with the 1stBattalion, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment on 10thJune 2000 and was re-designated as 1/10 SLSR. Major AMR Dharmasiri psc was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the 1/10 Battalion.

Meanwhile, the troops of the Battalion took an active part in the 'Operation Kinihira I' followed by II, III and IV (operations) carrying the same code name. Troops then took part in 'Operation Agnikeela'.

On 17th February 2002, while deployed in Jaffna, the 10th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha regiment was re-established as a 'new' Battalion.

Major H Kulathunga RSP was appointed as the Commanding Officer on 17th February 2002. The Battalion underwent Battalion Training at Minneriya during the period 25th February to 25th May 2002.

Later, the Battalion deployed to Mallachchena and then moved on to be deployed at Nagarkovil. Tasked with securing the High Security Zone around Palali, the Battalion deployed in Vasavilan.

In December 2004, in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami the Battalion engaged in carrying out work related to the provision of assistance to those affected.
