History of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regiment

Once the significant chapter was opened in 2005 with the dispatch of an additional platoon from the armoured corps to cover duties in the United Nation's peace keeping mission heity. The additional platoon left on 30.09.2005 accompanied by four numbers of BTR armoued tanks,one Brem - K (distress) recovery vehicle and a Bream K recovery vehicle. A group comprisals 6 x SLEME technical soldier (technicians) from the EME Armoured Battalion was included in the team detached exclusively for the purpose of effecting repairs to armoured tanks and vehicle. The composition of the group thus selected largely depend on the nature of duties expected of such staff. Along with the first contingent dispatched to Haiti on peace keeping duties 16 number Uni Buffle vehicles turned at the EME Base Workshop Udawalawa were also sent alongside. The Unibuffle vehicles were continuously mobilized in peace keeping mission operations.

On 14 December 2005 Brigadier HMWP Bandara was appointed as the officiating Quarter Master General. The 2 (v) SLEME instituted in an acquired land comprising 44 acres situated in Kahagolla, Diyathalawa. Lt Col PL Thisera became the first Commanding Officer to assume duties in this unit. Simultaneously 2 Bn SLEME unit in Saliyapura as renamed as 5 battalion SLEME in compliance with instructions received from the Army Headquarters.

During the early 2009, then Comd of the Army Lt Gen GSM Fonseka Appointed EME officers to some of the key appointments in the Army. The appointment of Brigadier GS Padumadasa USP who was appointed to the post of Military Secretary on 18 February 2009 was the first time ever that a SLEME officer was appointed to this position. Major General WGMUR Perera USP of the SLEME Regiment was appointed to the post of Deputy Chief of Staff in 05 may 2009, which post is the highest rank that a service unit officer could possibly as aspire to achieve. A new post in EME Directorate was created as it became obvious to enhance duties of technical administration in keeping with the increase of duties entrusted to the SLEME regiment. For this purpose Colonel MAAD Sirinarga was appointed to the post of Colonel EME of the Directorate of EME as from 11 may 2009.

The Sri Lanka Artillery regiment was further reinforced with the allocation of the modern 122m, 130mm, 155mm, artillery guns and 122 Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers in 2008. Maj HMHN Herath, Lt Vithanage, Lt DMR Rupasena who performed duties as commanding officer at that period of time ,together with group of NCO's received a comprehensive training in China and Bangladesh equalizing them to acquire the necessary skills to repair modern equipment.

The Corps of EME celebrated the 60th anniversary in a grand scale on 12 December 2009. The EME Director Generals from UK, India and Pakistan participated in the series of calibrations mostly as guests of honor. A grand dinner was held at Hilton Hotel Colombo on 15 December 2009. The Army Commander was the chief guest at the dinner while a most of senior army officials, retired army officers and large no of distinguish guests participated.

The 6 Bn SLEME was established on 28.12 2009 in Nandicadal area in Mulathive. Similarly 7 Bn SLEME unit was opened on 03.07.2010 in Bharathipuram area in KiIlinochchi. Later on 05.05.2011 the 7 Bn SLEME was shifted from Barathipuram and installed in Kokavil where it is presently established.

In January 2010 there was a meeting of regional senior EME Officers' meeting took place at Electronics and Mechanical Engineering School Secunderabad India. This was the first time that the invitation received to Sri Lankan EME Officers to participate to an international function like this. From Sri Lanka Colonel Comandant Maj Gen WGMUR Perera USP and the Director EME Brigadier TN Jyasuriya USP Hdmc participated. For this event British Royal Director EME also participated.

On the intervention of Director EME Brigadier TN Jyasuriya USP Hdmc a total number of 12 service stations for servicing army vehicle were set up. Each EME Battalion was allocated daily dealyed service stations under this scheme. The total expenditure received by the Sri Lanka army for this program exceeded almost rupees 200 million. Hither to, although such services were carried out by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC). Their services lacked efficiency due to the inadequacy of the required service stations. In this manner problems confronted was not only solved but also created a system where the entire fleet of vehicles with Sri Lanka army could be serviced at all SLEME Bn service stations.

Further more in the instructions issued by the secretary ministry of Defense and Urban Development and the approval given by the Commander of the Army from 2012 onwards EME soldiers are contributing to national development projects in a significant manner. All such projects were carried out under the direct supervision of Director EME Brigadier TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc.

In another turn of events that took place, two senior officers Brigadier DR Mayadunne RSP and Brigadier TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc were promoted to the rank of Major Generals on 2014.05.02. This is considered as another event of significant which will be remembered army many other event recorded is SLEME History. A guard of honour was held to honor the senior officers at the Maley Cricket Grounds on 09.05 2014 in a ceremonial and commendable manner.

With the elevation to the rank of Major General the position of Director EME which was previously held by (Brig TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc) was subsequently revised as Director General EME on 02.05.2014. The army industrial work shop at Salawa Kosgama was declared open by Director General EME Major General TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc on 2nd September 2014 under the guidance of Commander of the Army Lt Gen RMD Rathnayake RWP RSP USP NDU Psc. Senior most EME officer Major General TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc in addition to the post of director General EME also received appointment as Director General Army Industrial Projects was also tasked from 16.05.2014. As a result of this appointment the Director General Army Industrial Projects was also tasked with the superiority duties of the SLAOC industrial workshop Dombagoda and the ESR Industrial Workshop Panadura in addition to the Industrial Workshop in Salawa.

At the end of the year 2014 this regiment was comprised of 200 officers and 5763 other ranks.

After the retirement of Major General TN Jayasuriya USP Hdmc on 2015.04.18, Brigadier PSRL Rajakaruna Lsc was appointed as the Colonel Commandant and the Director EME on 2015.04.20 and presently He is carrying out his duties with holding above positions.
