145 th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VOLUNTEER FORCE OF THE SRI LANKA ARMY VOLUNTEER FORCE

This year marks a proud milestone as the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), established ceremonially as a ground force on 1st April 1881, commemorates 145 years of dedicated service, loyalty, and commitment to the nation. The SLAVF celebrated its 145th Anniversary on 2nd April 2026 under the auspices of Major General K V N P Premaratne RSP USP nps psc, Commandant, SLAVF. The anniversary programme featured a series of events of military, social, and religious significance, honouring the legacy of the SLAVF while paying tribute to its War Heroes. From its historic beginnings to its vital contributions today, the SLAVF continues to embody the values of courage, discipline, and patriotism that have shaped its enduring legacy.

Accordingly, the first working day was marked with the anniversary day message issued by the Commandant, SLAVF. In his message, the Commandant highlighted the significance of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, emphasising the importance of upholding national claims and following established rules diligently. He expressed appreciation to the President of Sri Lanka and Commander of the Army for taking the initiative to drive this nationwide effort. Stressing the need for internal transformation, he underlined that genuine change begins with personal integrity and the rejection of illegal practices. He reminded the troops that, as members of a prestigious Army, they must embody discipline, uphold high moral values, and serve not only their families but also their nation with dedication. The Commandant also spoke about the importance of balancing professional duties with personal well-being, maintaining mental, physical, and social health, and continuously enhancing one’s knowledge and resilience. He paid tribute to those who had made immense sacrifices to secure peace in the country and emphasised the ongoing responsibility to safeguard national security and sovereignty for future generations. Furthermore, he acknowledged the vital role of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and their contributions, shared reflections on his own accomplishments, and extended gratitude to previous Commandants and Deputy Commandants for their dedicated service. Concluding his address, he wished all members of the SLAVF strength, courage, and success in all their endeavors. Furthermore, a sapling was planted at the office complex to commemorate the occasion.

In line with the celebrations; the Headquarters of the SLAVF integrated with a community programme at the Sanda Sevana Elders’ Home, where personnel actively contributed to improving the well-being and living environment of the residents. The effort reflected a strong sense of social responsibility, compassion, and commitment to supporting the elderly within the community and the lunch was afforded for them on 29 March 2026. Additionally, a Bodhi Pooja ceremony was held on 01 April 2024.

Further, an all-ranks lunch was held, providing an opportunity for Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers to interact freely, thereby strengthening mutual respect, unity, and the spirit of comradeship, and reinforcing the bonds that underpin teamwork and collective commitment within the organisation.

In recognition of the outgoing Commandant’s committed and dedicated service, Warrant Officers of the SLAVF presented a souvenir to the Commandant as well as another souvenir was awarded by the all ranks of the SLAVF in appreciation of his contributions.
