Principal Staff Officer – Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force
Brigadier AMC Abeykoon RWP RSP USP assumed duties as the Principal Staff Officer of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) with effect from 25 November 2024.
Brigadier Chandra Abeykoon enlisted in the Sri Lanka Army on 09 December 1991 under the Intake SC 3, and he has counted above 34 years of active service in the Sri Lanka Army. The senior officer is a battle-hardened officer who groomed by the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment which is an elite infantry regiment devotedly, consigned to safeguarding this soil.
The senior officer is a proud product of Ibbagamuwa Central College. The military stance upheld by the senior officer has been exceptionally fostered and moulded due to successful integration in Command, Instructional and Staff appointments during his military career.
Embarking on a challenging career, the senior officer served as a Platoon Commander in Vavunia, Chaddikulam, Wallioya, Kokilai, Poonaren and Elephant Pass that were vulnerable points during the crucial time of the country. The senior officer actively contributed in the operation of Jayasikuru, and served as General Staff Officer 3 in 22 Infantry Division and Company Commander in Mannar.
The military career of the senior officer was outshined with duties and responsibilities in the appointments of Officer Command in Administrative Company, Motor Transport Officer, Administrative Officer Command, Chief Instructor , Company Commander, Staff Officer III (Administration) and Staff Officer II (Legal) in the Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment. In addition, he received the opportunity to perform duties as Staff Officer III (Administration) in the Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka National Guard. Furthermore, he held the appointments of Officer Command (Administration), Operations and Training Officer and Second-in-command in 8 and 14 Battalions of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment. In particular, the senior officer held the appointment of second-in-command for United Nations Battalion in Haiti.
Further, he served as the Staff Officer I (Administration) in the Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) in 56 Division , General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) in 56 Division, Staff Officer 1 in Adjutant General’s Branch , Colonel (Movement) in Directorate of Movement , Colonel (Coordinating) in 22 Infantry Division and Colonel (General Staff) in 24 Infantry Division.
The senior officer commanded 24 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and performed duties as the Commander in 241 and 582 Infantry Brigades. He extended a precise duty as the Director in the Ranaviru Seva Authority.
In the peripheries of local and foreign, the senior officer widened his horizons attending career and military courses that enlighten his personality as a military leader.
The senior officer qualified from National Defence College in National Security and Strategic Studies in Sri Lanka. The local courses followed by the senior officer include Artillery Observation Course at the Sri Lanka Artillery Training School, Advanced Infantry Battalion Training Course at the Infantry Training Centre and Unit Account Course at the Regimental Headquarters Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps. As foreign courses of studies, the senior officer has followed the Junior Command Course in India and Jungle Combat Warfare Training Course in Malasia.The senior officer has been adorned with gallantry awards of Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) for the brave conduct at the face of the enemy, Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) for his distinguished conduct in the face of the enemy and Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for valuable service and devotion to duty marked by exceptional ability, merit and exemplary conduct provided not less than 15 years continuous and uninterrupted service and possess and unblemished record of moral and military conduct. In recognition of his service to the establishment, he has been recognized with other service medals as well.
Brigadier Chandra Abeykoon is married to Mrs. Yamuna Abeykoon.
