Deputy Commandant – Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force

Major General WGP Sisira Kumara RSP, an illustrious military officer who possesses wealth of above 36 years of distinguished service, assumed duties as the 33rd successor in the office of the Deputy Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) with effect from 30 May 2024. Major General Sisira Kumara, is a battle-hardened officer who is self-inspired by loyalty in fulfilling the obligations on behalf of the motherland.

The senior officer enlisted in the Volunteer Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 07 January 1988 during a crucial period when an internal insurrection was being erupted in each corner of the country and the violence of LTTE. The senior officer is an alumnus of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and was posted to the 5th (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry on 17 June 1988.

The senior officer enlisted in the Volunteer Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 07 January 1988 during a crucial period when an internal insurrection was erupting in each corner of the country and the violence of LTTE. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and was posted to the 5th (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry on 17 June 1988.

The senior officer engaged in extremely precise duties in the entire demography of Gomarankadawala, Kantalai, Kinniya, Kuchchaveli, Morawewa, Muttur, Padavi Siripura, Seruvila, Echchalampattu and Mavil Aru in Trincomalee administrative territory under the 5th (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry from 1988 to 1995 which is a critical and decisive period in the country. Embracing a challenging career that is beyond the convention, the senior officer served in the appointments of Platoon Commander and Officer Commanding under the subject battalion during this period. In 1995, subsequent to inter battalion change, the senior officer was attached to the 9th (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry in Jaffna, and held the appointments of Officer Commanding and Second-in-command up to 2002 spanned over seven years.The senior officer held the appointments of Second-in-command in the 20th Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard located in Vavuniya from 2002 to 2005, and the Second-in-command and the Battalion Commanding Officer in the 9th (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry from 2005 to 2011. The senior officer earns the tribute and the honour for being a true exemplification of spirited soldering on engagement of duties in strong and volatile points in North and East of this soil until the termination of the battle.

In addition, the senior officer served as a Liaison Officer in the Regimental Headquarters Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps and Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry, and Colonel Coordinating Officer in 24 and 68 Divisions.The senior officer held the appointments of Colonel Coordinating Officer in the Security Forces Headquarters (Jaffna) and Brigadier Coordinating Officer in the Security Forces Headquarters (West) and (Jaffna)

The tenures as the Colonel Training and the Inspector of Training in the Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army prompted a remarkable command of the training aspect which is an integral part of the military career. Particularly, the senior officer received the opportunity to command 1 Sri Lanka Rifle Corps at the rank of Colonel.

In the periphery of local and foreign, Major General Sisira Kumara widened his horizons by attending key career and military courses that enlightened his personality as a military leader. The local courses followed by the senior officer included Assault Pioneer Course at the Engineer Training School, Young Officers’Course consisted of three courses at the Infantry Training School in Minneriya, Commando Training School in Uva-Kudaoya and Army Training School in Maduruoya, Human Resource Management Course in Panagoda, Regimental Accounts Course at the Engineer Services Regiment, Company Commander Course at the 51 Division, Second-in-command Course at the Combat Training School, Junior Staff Course at the Sri Lanka Army Military Academy, Parachute Course at the Commando Regiment Training School and Computer Course at the Kothalawala Defence University . In addition, the senior officer has followed the Junior Command Course in India.

Major General Sisira Kumara has been recognized as a true military officer, and adorned with Rana Sura Padakkama for his bravery on the battle front. The senior officer has also received service decorations of East Humanitarian Operation Medal, North Humanitarian Operation Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal, 75th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, Long Service Medal, Seva Abhimani Medal and Service Medal.

Major General Sisira Kumara is married to Mrs. Medani Ashoka and blessed with three offsprings.
