Major General W P A D W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu, the 56th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force handed over his duties and responsibilities in the office of Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force in a simple ceremony on 14 September 2024 in order to take up his new errand as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, the second honoured appointment in the Sri Lanka Army.
The formalities observed at the Headquarters premises in keeping with military traditions commenced with reviewing of the Guard Turnout presented by the troops of the Sri Lanka Singha Regiment and the Senior Officer was warmly received by the Deputy Commandant SLAVF Major General W G P Sisira Kumara RSP. Principal Staff Officer Brigadier M M Salwatura RWP RSP USP, Brigadier Administration Brigadier B M R J Bandaraand Commanding Officer of Headquarter Battalion Colonel H M A P Pushpakumara at the entrance.
The outgoing Commandant paid his tribute by laying a wreath on the memorial of late Captain Saliya Aladeniya PWV in the gesture of cherished memories of fallen war heroes who sacrificed their lives in past to dawn a better future for us.
Afterwards, in complying with the military formalities, the outgoing commandant was ushered by the Deputy Commandant SLAVF to the saluting dais to receive an elegant guard of honours amidst melodies of patriotic songs in the air.
The Senior Officer placed his signature on the Visitors’ Book following handing over the duties at the office of the Commandant. In accordance with the military customs, the Senior Officer unveiled his portrait adding his tenure to the great legacy of Commandant of the Volunteer Force.
Addressing the troops, the outgoing Commandant extended his gratitude for the members of the Volunteer Force who integrated with him in realizing organizational objectives during his assignments of duties. Further, he stated that it was a great pleasure to command the SLAVF which is the firsthistorical military establishment of the country formed in 1881.
Following the troop address, the outgoing commandant posed for a group photograph with the invited officers and staff of the Headquarters of the Volunteer Force as a souvenir.
Later on, the Outgoing Commandant was honoured with a memento in appreciation of his illustrious service to the Volunteer Force by all ranks of SLAVF and he presented a chequeworth of 1,70000.00to Colonel J A J Jayaratne KSP,the Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Training School, in order to purchase a television whichis a much needed requirement of Gymnasium SLAVFTS.
The day’s proceedings reached the culmination with the departure of Major General W P A D W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu amidst goodbye cheers of Officers and Other Ranks who street lined on both sides of the road leading to the main gate.
