Leaving an indelible mark with national and international feats, Athletics Championship of the year reached to its culmination with ameet record, and the final curtain of the meet was down with the auspicious of Major General W P A D W Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu - the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force as the Chief Guest on 28 August 2024 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diayagama.
More than a competition, this endeavor undoubtedlyflourishes the decorum of a healthy army whichis as an integral part of a soldier. The tradition of sports upheld by the Volunteer Force is a key delegation embedded in the vision and mission of the establishment that derives precise generational benefits, and the event was organized creating a lasting impact on our nation’s sporting landscape for the year with the utmost blessings of Lieutenant General H L V M Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, the Commander of the Army.
Outstanding athletes who represented eacharmy establishment of the Volunteer Force had been competing under track and field disciplines from 26 to 28 August 2024 reflecting on ambitious achievements and expectations for the years beyond.Contestants competed under 24 events,and Private Wijesooriya WAMR 2(Volunteer) of the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps claimed for a new meet record of 35:00.42 minutes in 10000 metres.
The Chief Guest of the day was accompanied by the distinguished gathering with a traditional procession of Ves dancers. The scheduled formalities were observed in connection with the closing day ceremony with an encouraging opening remarks made by Major General WGP Sisira Kumara RSP- the Deputy Commandant of the Volunteer Force. Accordingly, final competitions were steered along with invitation relays represented by schools with complete respect to the rules, regulation and ethics of sports.
A heart touching cultural event and aband display were unfolded by the troops of the Directorate of Army Band and Performing Arts adding a glamorous memory to the occasion.
The award of medals, certificates and trophies to the achievers took place, and the day’s Chief Guest - the Commandant-Volunteer Force, awarded the championship trophies. DilhaniLekamge who threw a national record Javelin Throw at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2023 in Bangkok and attended the Javelin Throw for Paris Olympic Games in 2024 was awarded with a financial award as a token of appreciation.
The event bridges the future of its successors ahead and the energy and the talent of athletes demonstrate the human spirit instilled in soldiering. In pleasure of such insightful striving, thedeclaration of the ceremonial closing was proclaimed by the Chief Guest in the bliss of witnessing a rewarding athletics championship.
The athletics meet was attended by Major General K A W N H Bandaranayake USP -General Officer Command 14 Division,Major General E M M Fernando Hdmc Lsc AATO- Logistics Commander,Mr. Jagath Gnanasiri Silva – Vice President of the Sri Lanka Athletics,other invited officials, sports delegates, senior officers and officers who represented the Volunteer Force of the Sri Lanka Army.
