Major General U D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc, who rendered yeoman service to the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and the nation more than 35 years of service saluted in a customary ceremony before relinquished his appointment as the 53rd Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force on 28 December 2023 upon his retirement.
In consonance to the day’s agenda, the outgoing Commandant was warmly received by Principal Staff Officer, HQ SLAVF, Centre Commandant SLNG and Commanding Officer- Headquarter Battalion SLAVF and a Guard Turnout was reviewed on his arrival at the camp premises.
After a while, amid reverberating solemn melodies, Major General U D Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc placed the floral wreath before the Parama Weera Vibhushana Memorial and saluted the memory of fallen war heroes.
Subsequently, he was ushered to the saluting dais by Major General Thusitha Silva KSP, the Deputy Commandant, SLAVF to receive the Guard of Honour accorded by the troops of Sri Lanka National Guards amidst melodies of patriotic music in the air.
Marking an indelible chapter in the proud history of the Volunteer Force, the Senior Officer placed his signature on Visitors’ Book with thoughtful wishes and handed over his duties. Afterwards, he unveiled his portrait at his office and posed for a group photograph with the staff of the HQ SLAVF at Rendezvous Pavilion.
Addressing the troops, the outgoing Commandant extended his thank to all the members of the Volunteer Force who integrated with him in realizing organizational objectives during his short span of tenure and he was awarded plaque by Regimental Sergeant Major of HQ SLAVF on behalf of the Other Ranks of HQ SLAVF during the tea party.
The Senior Officer departed from the Headquarters amidst good-bye cheers of the Officers and Other Ranks who street lined on both sides of the road leading to the main gate.
Major General Darshana Wijesekera RWP RSP USP rcds psc is a true son born in this soil as the merits of the nation and he should deserve the salutation of the nation for his 35 years of unblemished service rendered to the battlefield as well as in command, instructional and staff appointments and he retires from the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 30 December 2023. All Ranks of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force wishing him a healthy, wealthy and a happy retirement!
