COMMANDANT, SRI LANKA ARMY VOLUNTEER FORCE APPLAUDS SRI LANKA ARMY ATHLETE PIYATHISSA’S INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE

The International Visually Impaired Marathon was successfully held on 19 April 2026 in Kasumigaura, Japan bringing together visually impaired athletes from around the world in a celebration of resilience, endurance and inclusive sport.

The event, dedicated to promoting equal opportunities in athletics for visually impaired competitors, witnessed strong international participation and inspiring performances from athletes representing various countries.

Representing Sri Lanka, Infantryman Piyathissa R W V of the Gajaba Regiment delivered a commendable performance securing an impressive 12th place in the competition.

In recognition of his achievement, he was awarded a plaque and a cash cheque on 23 April 2026 at the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) premises by Major General U K D D P Udugama RWP RSP USP ndc psc, Commandant of the SLAVF and Colonel of the Regiment, Gajaba Regiment, commending his performance and his contribution to representing Sri Lanka on the international stage.

This achievement was made possible through the direction of the Commander of the Army and the continuous guidance of the Colonel of the Regiment, Gajaba Regiment and the Commandant of Abhimansala 2.

It also reflects the strong support rendered by the Sri Lanka Army in nurturing and empowering its personnel to excel not only in military duties but also in sports, rehabilitation, and international competitive platforms. The Army continues to play a vital role in promoting discipline, resilience and holistic development, enabling its members to achieve excellence in diverse fields beyond conventional military responsibilities.
