SLASC SCHOOL - TISSAWEWA

ASC School was born as the Ceylon Army Service Corps driving school in 1953 with the training of 6 other rankers by using one heavy vehicle at the Kirulapana Polhengoda Army Camp. The honor of conducting this course goes to S/81006 Sgt. Henry W A, who is one of the initial members of the regiment. Thereafter, the catering assistant training course was started with 5 cooks. This course was initiated by S/81012 WO I R Kelee who was serving as a catering instructor of the regiment. Accordingly, the CASC Driving School was named as CASC trade school. Introducing of the clerk course for Army soldiers at the same premises in 1956, this CASC trade school was further perfected as a professional school. It was a special feature where civil servants who worked in the Ceylon Army under the Civil Administrative Service lectured the clerk course.

From 1953 to early 1962, this school was located at the Kirulapona Polhengoda camp. It was then moved to CASC Premises, the mother unit of our regiment was established at Panagoda Cantonment. While the Clerk course conducted by this school was subjected to provide administration of the Army educational centre in 1965, qualified instructors for the courses were employed from the CASC. In 1968, once again the school was assigned to conduct of clerk courses. The driving training section, which had been carried on under the CASC trade school was transferred to CSR at Kalutara.

During the time when the Driving training section was in Kalutara in addition to the training of heavy vehicles, another course was started to train double decker and bourses. The Kalutara Air Force Runway was used for the training activities. The driving training section was again shifted to Ridiyagama Army Camp and it was there up to 1971. Due to the JVP insurgency in 1971, the training process was temporarily stopped and the CASC trade school was moved to the Silawathura Camp.

In 1984, this school was relocated to the panagoda Army camp, and was established at the place where the present Regiment Centre is situated. The school was there until 1987 and on 02.01.1988 it was established at the Ranasewapura Camp which is placed under the North Central Command. (Present 21 Div HQ).In 1989 SLASC Trade School was shifted from the Ranasewapura Camp to the Tissawewa Army Camp where the school is presently located. At this juncture, the raising was published from AHQ to perform duties as a separate organization. At the same time SLASC trade school was renamed as ASC School. Accordingly the first commandant was appointed from Regt Centre – SLASC. Similarly, there were three lecture halls built in the premises of the 3rd Regiment of SLASC to conduct the clerk, driving and catering courses. In addition to the above courses, Tractor, Riding course as well as Transport NCOs, Catering Supervisor courses are also successfully conducted by expert instructors.

In 2002 with the continuation of the training programs of the ASC School, the Young Officers course was started for young officers of the Regiment. In addition to this a Middle Grade Course was started for officers the rank of Majors in 2004. Making the course more formal, an additional English course conducted by an expert instructor, has been started from the second batch of the clerk course in the year 2004. Further, practical training at star class tourist hotels has been included to the Catering Assistance courses. Students of the Driving Course are also given an additional technical knowledge at the Government Technical Training Institute at Orugodawatta. In addition to these special training the ASC School has initiated special Arms courses from the year 2004.
