COMMANDING OFFICER

LIEUTENANT COLONEL RA UDARATAGE SLASC

The history of the 2nd Sri Lanka army service Corps dates as far back as the early years of the 20thcentury, when the idea of forming a separate unit to carry out the all-important functions of ‘Supply and Transport’, was mooted during the fateful years of World War I during 1914 to 1918. Thus, Ceylon Supply & Transport Corps established on 12thApril 1918 and modeled itself on the lines of the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC). Since the role and functions of the Ceylon Supply and Transport Corps (CS & TC) were akin to that of the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC), an alliance was formed between the RASC and CS & TC on 31st March 1930 with the concurrence of His Majesty King George V and the uniform, insignia, badges and traditions of the RASC were adopted.

A further link with the RASC was strengthened on 3rd November 1932 when His Majesty King George V granted his approval for His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught to accept the Honorary Colonelcy of the Corps. This mutual association was completed when the Ceylon Supply & Transport Corps was renamed as the Ceylon Army Service Corps on 17th March 1933. The total strength of the corps at this time was 18 officers and 150 Other Ranks (soldiers).

With the formation of the armed forces of independent Ceylon, the most important and significant event in the history of the corps was the raising of the Ceylon Army Service Corps on 30th October 1949.
