After Ceylon gained independence on February 4, 1948, the Ceylon Service Corps was established as a permanent force on October 31, 1949. This was confined to one team and the first officer and first commander of the unit was Captain WW Perera, Pte Silva RSR was the first regular soldier. Established as a unit consisting of volunteers and soldiers, they were stationed at Avalon Square, Colombo. The Corps Headquarters was located at Kirulapana in 1956 at the time the 4th Engineer Regiment was located. In 1962 the unit headquarters was moved to the Panagoda Army Cantonment. After being designated as a republic in 1972, the unit was renamed as Sri Lanka Army Service Corps with effect from May 22, 1972.    Read More...
