66 DIVISION TAKES LEAD IN PLANTING TREES ALONG B-357 ROAD WITH CIVILIANS

A comprehensive project to plant trees along the B-357 road from Nalankatti to Paranthan was launched by the 66 Infantry Division Pooneryn on 12 January 2018, as an effort taken to support the concept of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General N U M M W Senanayake RWP RSP USP psc, to sustain the environmental protection. The project started with the blessings of Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander Security Forces - Kilinochchi.

The programme was organized in parallel with the National Tree Planting campaign ‘Ruk Ropana’ and planted 1500 Kumbuk saplings covering a 30 km stretch from Nalankatti to Paranthan along the B-357 road on the direction of Major General Duminda Keppetiwalana, General Officer Commanding – 66 Division. The Kumbuk saplings were donated by Road Development Authority, Department of Forest Conservation and Ceylon Electricity Board from Northern Province.

This comprehensive project is to be completed in 2 stages. The second stage will be commenced in order to plant trees in schools, pre schools, around small tanks and along minor roads in the area.

Divisional Secretary - Pooneryn, Officer in Charge - Pooneryn, Forest Officers - Kilinochchi and Pooneryn, Government Servants, Principal and students of Sri VigneshwaraVidyalaya - Pooneryn and civilians in the area participated in the launching of the tree planting campaign.

Government representatives, civilians and Army personnel. Brigade Commanders of 661 and 662 Brigades, all Officers and other Ranks of under command battalions helped in making the event a success.
