SRI LANKA ARMY INTER REGIMENT WRESTLING TOURNAMENT - 2014

The 11th Inter Regiment Wrestling Tournament was organized under the supervision and directions of Maj Gen S Ranasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, Chairman Sri Lanka Army Wrestling Association and Commander, Security Force (KLN) at “Nelum Piyasa” in Kilinochchi from 24 July 2014 to 31 July 2014. This Tournament marked a history as the First ever Inter Regiment Sports Tournament to be held in the North. The tournament was participated by teams representing 14 Regiments. The bouts were conducted as per rules and regulations of Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation and FILA (International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles) both in male and female weight categories. Over 260 Wrestlers in male and 30 Wrestlers in female totaling 290 wrestlers took part in 34 weight categories both in Novices and Championship bouts. Eleven referees/judges representing the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation assisted Army Wrestling Committee in conducting this most successful tournament. The finals of the tournament was held on 31 July 2014 at “Nelum Piyasa” in Kilinochchi with Maj Gen S A P P Samarasinghe RSP USP psc, Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army and Chairmen Army Sports gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. Number of trophies and awards were distributed amongst the best wrestlers by the Chief Guest. Lance Corporal Fernando WSC of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment was adjudged as the Best Wrestler while Private Niroshani SDS of 2 Battalion (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women Corps clinching the award for Best Female Wrestler. Gunner Fernando KWMS of Sri Lanka Artillery was adjudged as the Best Emerging Wrestler of the Tournament. The Champions Challenge Trophy introduced for the first time was awarded to Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment for scoring a total of 38 points while the Runner Up Challenge Trophy was awarded to Sri Lanka Artillery for scoring 28 points. In the Novices category it was Sri Lanka Engineers who grabbed the Challenge Trophy for scoring 31 points while Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers taking the Runner Up Challenge Shield by scoring 28 points. 5th Battalion (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women Corps took the Champions challenge trophy while 4th Battalion (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women Corps taking the Runner Up challenge Shield.
