OTARA VISITS COMMUNITY DOG SQUADS IN KILINOCHCHI

Security Force Headquarter Kilinochchi is conducting a social service project to safe guard the Community Dogs by way of developing Dog Squads with the purpose of employing them as an alternate recourse to preserve manpower. This project is focused on developing Community Dog (stray dog) Squads and to train them on surveillance and vigilance (watch Dogs) within military installation in the Security Force Kilinochchi Area of Responsibility. Further this could be named as another CSR project by the Security Forces to safe guard the community dogs. This project commenced on 08 June 2013 under the supervision of 661 Brigade Pooneryne with the guidance of Security Force Headquarter Kilinochchi. Since the commencement, 661 Bde has conducted four Work Shops on dog care/ handling and three Guard Dog Parades with assistance of the cannel section 4th Commando Regiment. Composition of a guard dog squad per battalion is as fol: a. 05 x at the Bn HQ and 10 Guard Dogs among Coys. b. Officer in charge. c. 2x NCOs. d. Dog handler and an additional handler per each dog. With the invitation of Commander Security Force Kilinochchi, the famous community dog lovers, “EMBARK” under the patronage of ODEL Sri Lanka visited Headquarter 661 Brigade Pooneryne on 22 July 2014. The Embark team was led by CEO and founder of ODEL- Sri Lanka, Ms Otara Gunewardene alone with 13 members comprising Chief of Sales Embark Ms Ashani Gopallawa, two Veterinary Surgeons, two medical assistants, four foreign dog enthusiasts and a media team. The embark team extended fol assistances to the Kilinochchi Community Dog Squad during this visit: a. Vaccination facilities. b. Medical advices and medicines. c. Tee shirts and arm band for dog handlers with Embark logo.
