Troops of 7 Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment and 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment of 57 Division of the Security Force HQ-Kilinochchi, repaired the sudden water leakage of Kandankulam tank bund in less than six hours preventing a major disaster that could damage a vast patch of cultivations and remote villages on 21 January 2021. Due to heavy rains that fell in the past couple of days, water level in the said tank reached spill levels and caused the hole of the bund, posing a grave threat to about huge cultivated fields and vegetable-growing chenas in low-lying areas.
On the guidelines and instructions of the Commander of the Security Forces-Kilinochchi Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda and under the supervision of the Commander 571 Infantry Brigade and the Commanding Officers of 7 Battalion Sri Lanka Infantry Regiment and 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment immediately took steps to plaster the split and avoid a possible major breach with the support by Technical Officer of Department of Agrarian Development Kilinochchi, group of farmers and civilians in the area.
Chairman of the Farmers’ Community along with the villagers expressed their gratitude to the Army for their timely intervention and necessary action.
