AUSTRALIAN AID AND UNICEF COLLABORATED TO ASSIST EDUCATION IN KILINOCHCHI

KN/Kilinochchi Maha Vidyalam started as a junior secondary school in 1929. In few years, it transformed into a secondary school with commerce and arts streams in advanced level. The school suffered displacements at no of occasions due to conflict situation and reopened on 11 January 2010. The situation prevailed in the school with the reopening attracted the attention of UNICEF. On their mediation, Australian aid program undertook the reconstruction of the school. 15 February 2013 was the day for the entire school community including parents. Australian high commissioner Robyn Mudie, Sri Lankan representative for UNICEF Reza Hossaini, Kilinochchi MP Murugesu Chandrakumar, Secretary to the ministry of education, sports and cultural affairs northern province S Sathyaseelan, Kilinochchi GA R Kedeeswaran, Commander Security Forces Kilinochchi Major General Udaya Perera, Zonal education directors, old boys, military officials, parents altogether declared open new additions to the school. The addition included Two (02), two storied buildings, One (01), three storied building and a canteen facility. Laboratories, class rooms, auditoriums, staff rooms and music rooms were included in the new buildings. The total cost was 86 Million Rupees. Students presented some very attractive dance items at the opening day and added glamour to ceremony showing their talents in the dance and arts arena. Australian high commissioner Robyn Mudie, Sri Lankan representative for UNICEF Reza Hossaini, Kilinochchi MP Murugesu Chandrakumar, Secretary to the ministry of education, sports and cultural affairs northern province S Sathyaseelan and the principal of the school addressed the gathering. Australian high commissioner in her address reiterated the commitment of Australian government towards developing education in Sri Lanka. She explained that the total program includes developing 23 schools in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts. She further appreciated the perseverance by teaching staff despite heavy disturbances during past.
