HISTORY OF THE 9 FIELD ENGINEER REGIMENT

BRIEF HISTORY

9 Engineer Regiment (RFT) was raised on 10 Feb 2000 undercommand to Headquarters Corps of Engineers. During the tenure of year 2000 to 2003 Unit was deployed under 21 Infantry Division (216 and 217 Infantry Brigades respectively) at Irranailluppaikulam, Salambakulam and Parayanakulam. From year 2003 to 12 June 2007 Unit was deployed under 56 Infantry Division, (562 Infantry Brigade) at Irranailluppaikulam (North West of Vavuniya). From 12 June 2007 to 07 October 2009 Unit was deployed under 59 Infantry Division (591 and 593 Infantry Brigades respectively) at Kokkuthuduwai , Alampil and Mullaittivu. Subsequently Unit was transform to Classic role from RFT role on 08 Sep 2009 and located at Boo Oya under Comd to Engr Bde. So that 0 x 211 mobilized civilian plant operators were seconded to the Unit from 4 Engineer Regiment (V) SLE by the year 2009 and 103 during the year 2010. This has considerably reduced the burden of scarcity of trained plant operators to handle new machine fleet of the unit.

During the humanitarian operation unit performed infantry tasks in Kalmadhu, Kokkuthuduwai, Janakapura and Nayaru areas. However the unit have contributed significantly in the national development projects in various districts and mine clearing in mines contaminated area around Madhu church.
