Major General JR Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, is the 09th Colonel of the Regiment in the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment.
Major General JR Kulatunga was born on 06 of July 1964 at Wellatta. He was a product of Nalanda college in Colombo and he was very clever student in borth academic and sport. He was very popular sportsmen in school Cricket team and Hockey team. During his school period he was cadet Sergeant in school Cadet Platoon.
Major General JR Kulatunga enlishted to the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 05 of March 1984, and thereafter completed his initial Officer Cadet training at prestigious Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyathalawa. At the termination of the basic training he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and subsequently posted to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army on 16 of November 1985.
Major General JR Kulatunga has followed numerous local and overseas courses in various fields of studies in view of enhance his professional knowledge in order to perfor entrusted duties as competent manner. Out of that courses followed in India, Malayasia, Rumenia, Pakistan, United States of America and Pilippine are very significant and able to obtained wide spreadout proffrssional knowledge in the international contest as well. He has received a Masters Degree in the field of National Security Administration from the University of Pilippine.
In his extended military career over the period of 35 years, he rendered his valuble servise in various capacities in Command, Instructional and Staff appointments from the elementary level up to the higher level to-date. Among several key appointments that he held were Commanding Officer of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Commandant of Sri Lanka Military Academy, Colonel of the Regiment Macanize Infantry, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Kotelawala Defence University, Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff College and Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment.
During his tour of duty he has commanded 8th Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry as a Commanding Officer and 534Bde, 516Bde, 552Bde, 512Bde as a Brigade Commander. Further, he was commanded 55 Infantry Division and 12 Infantry Division as a General Officer Commanding. The Commander of Security Force Wanni. During his breavery military career he has renderd valuble contribution to almost all the operation which have been conducted against the LTTE from the year of 1984 to until decisive victory of the last humanitarion operation.
His exceptional unique performances during operations against the LTTE have been well-recognized as a battlefield commander and well regognized leader who has high motivating capabilities. He was decorated with Rana Soora Padakkama (RSP) for his brewry acts during operations and he was one of a international exposure by representing several foreign deligations.
Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops bid farewell to the outgoing Colonel of the Regiment, on 05 July 2019 on his retirement the ceremony was formally held in keeping with military traditions at the SLLI Regimental Headquarters premises in Panagoda.
Events commenced with a ceremonial Guard Turnout followed by the Regimental Parade with the participation of Senior Officres, Officers ORs from all Units and commemoration of war heroes at monument.The day’s event was also included a all ranks tea party, at the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess The programme of events culminated with a ‘Guest Night’ hosted for Maj Gen Kulatunga and Mrs Thushari Kulatunga by Officers and their spouses in the Regimental Officers’ Mess.Finelly, on behalf of members of Sri Lanka Light Infantry Maj Gen LM Mudalige RWP RSP ndu has presented a memento and wish them for a prousperous future.
