FOSTERING POSITIVITY THROUGH MUSIC: A UNIQUE INITIATIVE

Under the guidance of Major General Lanka Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, Commandant (Overlooking) of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), a unique initiative to enhance social well-being among serving members was conducted on 21 st January at the Rendezvous Ground pavilion. This classical music therapy session was part of the “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign, spearheaded by the President of Sri Lanka, and aimed to foster positive mindsets and attitudes among participants.

The session was led by Dr. Wasantha Priyadarshana, an expert in Buddhist Psychotherapy and a lecturer at the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya. A distinguished scholar with a PhD in Career and Educational Counseling, Dr. Priyadarshana was invited by Brigadier Janitha Bandara, Deputy Commandant (Overlooking) of the SLAVF and one of his former students, who also played a key role in organizing the event.

This special program offered the officers and soldiers of the SLAVF, known for their courage, and dedication, a meaningful and refreshing experience. The activities were carefully designed to help them cope with personal and shared losses while providing an opportunity for reflection and renewal. Selected pieces of uplifting classical music were explored for their ability to foster strength and mindfulness. These musical creations deeply resonated with the participants, offering a sense of peace and inspiration amid the challenges of their duties.

The event was attended by Brigadier B. M. R. J. Bandara, Deputy Commandant (Overlooking), Brigadier A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP - Principal Staff Officer, senior officers, and other officers from the SLAVF Headquarters. The music therapy session left a lasting impression on all attendees, reaffirming the profound role of music in healing and well-being.
