SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS

Members of the Sinha Regiment, being professional soldiers they have proven to be, have also excelled in many fields of sports. Over the years men from the Sinha Regiment have excelled in various fields of sport at many levels including national and international levels. Notable sports performances at international level in the recent past

S/373057 Staff Sergeant Pradeep Sanjaya UPP

S/373057 Staff Sergeant Pradeep Sanjaya UPP joined the Sri Lanka Army during the last phases of ‘Humanitarian Operation’. He was posted to the 4th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and served in the North and East. On 28th December 2008 while deployed on operational duties at Kilinochchi, he was wounded as a result of an enemy mortar attack.

Realizing that he would have to carry his injury forever, he, concentrated his time and energy to develop improve his talents in the field of athletics. Training hard with undying enthusiasm he excelled in his chosen events at various competitions.

His performances earned his a place as a member of Sri Lanka’s Athletics Team for the London Paralympics in 2012. His efforts paid off when he won the bronze medal at the final of the 400m event. His victory marks as the first occasion a member of the Sinha Regiment has won a medal at a Paralympics.

In recognition of his achievement he was congratulated by His Excellence the President. He was also promoted to the rank of Sergeant by the Commander of the Army at the time Lieutenant General J Jayasooriya RWP VSV USP ndu psc. In recognition of the fame he brought upon the Sinha Regiment, on the recommendation of Colonel of the Regiment, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Achievements of Staff Sergeant Pradeep Sanjaya UPP won the gold medal for T46 group 400m running event at 16th Para Olympic Games held in Guangzhou, China in 2010. Also participated for 200m running event at the same.

Won the bronze medal for 400m running event at the Para Olympic Games in Landon 2012. Won the bronze medal for under T46 group at the IPC World Athletic Meet at Leo Town in London in 2013.

S/371324 Corporal Gunasekara WL

His talent and skill as a Wushu player earned him a place as a member of the National Team representing Sri Lanka at the World Wushu Championship in 2013 held in Malaysia. His performance at the Championship won him a bronze medal. His achievement is recorded as the first occasion where a Sri Lankan achieved such a feat.
