Major General Kithsiri Liyanage assumed duties as the 11th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 11 Division on Friday (7) at the Division Headquarters in Kundasale.
As the first segment of the day's programme, the incoming GOC of the 11 Division reviewed the Guard Turnout salute, presented by 10 GR troops on his arrival at the entrance to the Headquarters premises. Afterwards, the General Officer Commanding of the 11 Division was welcomed by Senior Officers and ushered to the office complex.
As the auspicious minute struck, amidst chanting of 'Seth Pirith' by members of the Maha Sangha, Major General Kithsiri Liyanage symbolically placed his signature in the first official document to mark his assumption of new office in the presence of Senior Officers and posed for an official group photograph with officers attending the event.
An All Rank tea that followed and his formal address to the Officers and Other Ranks culminated the day's proceedings. Due to COVID-19 threat, a few ceremonial formalities, inclusive of the formal Guard of Honour were scaled down as per instructions of the incoming GOC.
Major General Kithsiri Liyanage, prior to this new appointment served as the General Officer Commanding of the 52 Division of the SFHQ-Jaffna. The newly-appointed General Officer Commanding of the 11 Division Major General Kithsiri Liyanage succeeds Major General Sarada Samarakoon who is retiring from the Army.
Senior officers and other ranks attended the event in accordance with health guidelines.
