INTER BATTALION ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP – 2018 WAS HELD AT SUGATHADASA STADIUM COLOMBO

The closing ceremony of the Inter Battalion Athletics Championship - 2018 and award of trophies to winners in the event took place Thursday (17) evening at the Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake graced the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Major General Piyal Wickramaratne.

Major General Piyal Wickramaratne Colonel of the Regiment welcomed the gathering in his brief address, giving a warm welcome to the Commander of the Army and all attendees, he praised the cooperation given to him by all participant in the two – day tournament.

The Inter Battalion Athletics Championship - 2018 began of Wednesday (16), Colonel of the Regiment Major General Piyal Wickramaratne graced the occasion as the Chief Guest on first day event.

A few more than thousand Sinha athletes, representing all 24 battalions in Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment vied in the tournament against their fellow athletes as keen sportsmen of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment while showcasing their high standard of professional sportsmanship.

The day’s final programme covered events, such as 800m final, 100m final, 4x100m relay, 4x100m invitation relay schools, 4x200m invitation relay Inter Regiments. A separate spectacular Cultural Show and a March past added spirits of sportsmanship and provided a great time of rejoicing to the attendees.

The overall championship in Inter Battalion Athletics Championship - 2018 went to the athletes of 7 battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment with 126 points while 15 (V) battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment athletes won the second place with 101 points. L/Cpl Gunarthne AMPL 5 (V) SLSR was the best athlete in the Inter Battalion Athletics Championship - 2018

The formal closure of the mega event announced by the Commander of the Army after lowering of flags to suit the military traditions and formalities.
