Maj Gen A K A B Gunarathne, Director General Agriculture & Livestock and Second Senior most officer serving SLAGSC retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army after serving more than 33 years of distinguished service to the Nation on 02 January 2020. In keeping with the Military traditions the outgoing General Officer was accorded a Guard of Honour at the Regimental parade square which was followed by an all ranks tea party organized by RHQ SLAGSC at the Regimental Auditorium premises.
He was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army Regular Force on 17 March 1980 for SLMA SSC 11. During his tour of duty in addition to Grade I, II & III appointments at formations/ AHQ and unit level appointments Maj Gen Buwaneka Gunaratne commanded 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps and held the appointment of Director General Agriculture and Livestock.
He has taken initiative to form the Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock with the guidance of the previous Commanders of the Army and served more than 09 years of long term as Director, Agriculture & Livestocks until his retirement. During his Military career he has followed a number of local and foreign courses including Diploma in Agriculture- Aquinas College of Higher studies, Educational Officers Basic Course - Bangaladesh, Veterinary First Aid and Animal Hygiene Course - Pakistan and Defence Management Course - India.
A farewell dinner in honour of Maj Gen Buwaneka Guraratne and Mrs Suneetha Kodikara, Vice President of SLAGSC Seva Vanitha Branch was held at the Regimental Officers' Mess on the same day evening under the patronage of Maj Gen Kumara Handumulla, the Colonel Commandant, SLAGSC and Mrs. Deepa Handunmulla, President SLAGSC Seva Vanitha Branch. All council members and their spouses, senior and junior officers of SLAGSC were attended to the dinner adding glamour and colour to the event organized under the supervision of Colonel V E Weerakody, Centre Commandant and CO of RHQ Officers' Mess along with his staff. All ranks of the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps wishes a happy and a peaceful retirement life to the General Officer.
