Dharmaraja College, Kandy a premier and leading buddhist school in Sri Lanka with a history spanning over 130 years held its Annual Colours Award Ceremony on 29 November 2018 at the College auditorium to appreciate the achievements of the sportsmen who excelled in various sports disciplines.
Colonel Commandant Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps and Director General Financial Management, Army HQ Major General Wajira Palihakkara USP, a proud product of Dharmaraja College, Kandy graced the occasion as the Chief Guest on the invitation of the Principal Mr Dampiya Wanasingha, Staff and Board of Management of the College.
Chief Guest for the event was received by the Principal, Prefect of Games, Staff members, officials of the Board of Management and Prefects, before he was conducted in a procession led by the Western band of the Dharmaraja College. The day's events commenced by lighting the traditional oil lamp by the Chief Guest, Guest of honour, Principal, Prefect of Games and few distinguished invitees. The College song reverberated the auditorium and a documentary screened afterwards enlightened the audience on the sports achievements of young Rajans in 2017/2018. The Principal of Dharmaraja College delivered his welcome speech and welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of honour and all distinguished invitees.
Several scintillating and eye catching spectacles of cultural, musical items and dances meticulously choreographed by the music and dancing teaching staff and performed by young Rajans, dancing troupes of Mahamaya Girls College and Pushpadana Girls School, Kandy held the audience spell bound as the day's agenda unfolded one by one while awarding College Colours to the young Rajans appreciating their excellence in various sports at different levels i.e College Provincial, National and International level representing the country.
As the stage was getting ready for the honours Major General Wajira Palihakkara was invited to the main stage for presentation of Colours and the highest award "Dagoba" the pinnacle of the College crest to the outstanding sportsmen and the Best Sportsmen of the year.
The grand presentation of colours reached its apex as the Chief Guest awarded the most coveted award ''the most outstanding sportsmen of the year'' to young Disanka Tennakoon for his national and international achievements representing the College and country in Table Tennis.
Major General Wajira Palihakkara in his brief speech to the occasion congratulated all colour recipients and outstanding performers reminding the importance of maintaining discipline, leadership skills, hard work, team work and respecting final decision in true spirit as sportsmen. He thanked the Principal and officials of the Board of Management for the honour bestowed upon him by inviting to grace this occasion as the Chief Guest.
