Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps has a proud history which runs back to 1951. The Pay and Records, Band and Education branch which functioned separately were amalgamated to raise this Corps on 29 November 1951 and was published as a Regular Corps in the Ceylon gazette by the Governor HV Soulbury.
From the inauguration of the Sri Lanka Army on 10 October 1945, the Pay and Records branch has been functioning as a section of Army Headquarters. In the beginning, one Officer, three civil personnel and three clerks from the Ceylon Guard served to accomplish the duties of this section. On 15 October 1949, Captain BJ Wijemanna MBE ED was appointed as the Staff Captain (P&R) for the first time. He was promoted to the rank of Major on 01 April 1951 and appointed as the Deputy Assistant General (P&R).
From the British period the Army Band was orchestrating in parades, national festivals and public functions. The first infantry band was formed in 1980 and the present SLAGSC band was formed on 22 June 1950. 2\Lt GT Perara who was serving in the British Army was appointed as the band master.
Having appraised the arable land of five acres for agriculture in close proximity to 4 SLA, Panagoda Army farm was established in 1960. The initial expenses were borne by the regimental fund and this farm consisted of animals such as swine, goats and cattle. This Corps was able to contribute immensely to the "Waga Sangramaya" campaign in 1960's
