Under the guidance of Mrs. Swendrini Dissanayake, President, the Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) scholarship programme was conducted for the children of Army personnel and civil employees to uplift their educational standards on 03 March 2025 at the Army Headquarters.
Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, Commander of the Army, graced the event as the Chief Guest.
This scholarship awarding ceremony was organized for 232 students who excelled in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination held in 2024, as well as the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations conducted in 2023. Scholarships were presented to the students by the Commander of the Army, the President of ASVU, and other invited guests. The event was further enriched by captivating performances presented by the Army Dancing Troupe.
A total of Rs. 10,260,000.00 was spent on this initiative, with Rs. 7,060,000.00 was borne by the Army Commander’s Welfare Fund, while the ASVU contributed Rs. 3,200,000.00 to provide scholarships for 232 children. Additionally, new savings accounts were opened at the National Savings Bank, with scholarships of Rs. 15,000.00 each awarded to 34 students who excelled in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, Rs. 25,000.00 each awarded to 134 students who achieved nine 'A' passes in all subjects in the 2023 G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination, and Rs. 100,000.00 granted to 64 students who excelled in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination by obtaining three 'A' passes.
Additionally, the National Savings Bank provided each scholarship recipient with a set of exercise books and a school bag. During the event, the Commander of the Army and the President of ASVU presented mementos to the executive officers represented the National Savings Bank.
Following the scholarship awarding ceremony, all the children who attended the event had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with the Commander of the Army and the President of ASVU while enjoying the specially arranged tea reception. After the tea reception, the scholarship recipients posed for a group photograph with the Commander of the Army and the President of ASVU.
Additionally, one of the scholarship recipients delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with the distribution of lunch for the children.
The Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, senior members of ASVU, Senior Officers, Officers, and other distinguished guests attended the event.
