The Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU) during its monthly meeting on Monday (11 September) awarded a bank deposit of Rs 25,000/-, school bags, exercise books, and a till box to 51 students of retired/ deceased Army personnel who had excelled in the Grade 5 scholarship examination.
The project launched on a proposal of Mrs Janaki Liyanage, President, ASVU aims at uplifting their educational standards and supporting their economic hardships. During the event, ten children from different regiments symbolically received those incentives. Additionally, a hearing aid was donated to the sister of a Warrant Officer I.
To help complete the remaining construction work of the house of a Corporal, Mrs Liyanage donated a sum of Rs 3 lakhs during the same occasion as the Chief Guest. The monthly meeting concluded with a group photograph of participating children along with the ASVU President.
The monthly meeting, presided by MrsJanaki Liyanage was held at the multifunctional hall at the Army HQ. A new executive committee was also appointed after Major H.S Wanniarachchi, Executive Secretary read out the minutes of the last meeting.
Major P.G.P.C Kumari, Treasurer presented the budget and accounts of the ASVU to the gathering.
Towards the end, members interacted with one another during refreshments before they sat for a few group photographs prior to their departure. Newly-appointed executive committee members are as follows:
