With the participation and guidance of the Colonel Commandant of SLAGSC, Maj Gen A M K G P S K Abeysinghe, and the President of the Seva Vanitha Branch, Mrs. Thushari Abeysinghe, ten senior members of the Seva Vanitha Branch, accompanied by the Center Commandant, Col T G N De Silva, conducted a visit to the Indira Cancer Trust and Suwa Arana on 25 September 2024.
The purpose of the visit was to appraise the well being of children, between one and sixteen years of age, undergoing cancer treatment at the trust as inpatients as well as their families. Mrs. Thushari Abeysinghe and all Seva Vanitha members were warmly welcomed by the staff, and later toured the wards and chatted with the children. Mrs. Thushari Abeysinghe listened to their stories with care and compassion and observed firsthand the resilience of the children in the face of their cancer treatments and the fortitude of their caregivers as they navigate the challenging road ahead of them.
The visit then took a more lighthearted turn as a musical program and karaoke session was organized for the children by the Seva Vanitha Branch, with the participation of the band. The children enjoyed themselves to the fullest, taking part in singing and dancing activities.
After the musical event, Mrs. Thushari Abeysinghe presented each child with a special care package containing essential items such as clothes, baby soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, exercise books as well as pens and pencils. Items donated to the trust in general consisted of story books, coloring books, painting books, school workbooks, stationery items such as pastel crayons, water colors, scissors, play dough, A4 boards for handicrafts and food items like milk powder and cheese. Altogether, the items donated totalled a cost of over Rs. 300,000. A significant sum of Rs. 50,000 for medical assistance was also contributed.
Overall, the visit was a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of the Seva Vanitha Branch of SLAGSC, in collaboration with the staff of the Indira Cancer Trust and Suwa Arana. All members of the Seva Vanitha Branch extend their warmest wishes to the children, hoping for their continued strength, good health, and a swift recovery.
