The 2nd Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps was established on 1st January 1996. The Corps was raised with a primary aim of releasing male counterparts for field duties and to cater for operational requirements of defencive nature in the field areas. This is the first ever Volunteer Women Battalion in the Sri Lanka Army. The battalion consisted of 07 officers and 213 soldiers at the inception.
The first Commanding Officer was Lieutenant Colonel HL Weerathunga SLAGSC, and the first Second in Command was Major WWMG Koswaththa SLAWC. Lieutenant DDD Liyanage SLAWC was the first Adjutant of 2(V) SLAWC. First Quarter Master was Lieutenant (QM) BAK Basnayake ESR.
After the establishment of the Battalion, manning of road blocks and performance of other internal security duties in operational and non operational areas were assigned to the Battalion, mainly in Elephantpass, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee, Valikanda, Batticlo, Ampara, and Colombo areas.
On 10.01.1997, 2(V) SLAWC HQ moved from the premises of HQ SLAVF Battaramulla to Anuradapura, at 600/49, Ranasewapura, Anuradapura.
After the establishment of 3(V) SLAWC at Dehiattakandiya, the detachments in the Eastern area, which were under command to 2(V) SLAWC, were handed over to 3(V) SLAWC. Detachments at Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee, Walikanda, Batticlo, Ampara, and Dehiaththakandiya were transferred accordingly.
Battalian has performed Duties such as,

- b. Manning road blocks and body checking.
- c. Cordon and search operations.
- d. Security at rehabilitation camps.
- e. Clerical duties.
- f. Ceremonial duties.
