With the dire need to increase the number of woman soldiers in the Army, the 4th Battalion of Women’s Corps was formed at 21 Division Anuradapura on 10th February 1999, to be employed mainly in the Wanni area, to further the assistance of Women’s Corps in the move to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. On 27th June 1999, the Battalion Headquarters was relocated at Medawachchiya old handloom factory. On the same day, Lieutenant Colonel ANR Owitipana SLAWC assumed the command of the Battalion. As the initial deployment of the Battalion, Officers and soldiers were detached to 211 Brigade (01 x 34), 213 Brigade (00 x 84) and Poonewa (01 x 30). On 8th July 1999, 01 x 50 were deployed in Kanagarayankulam area following an anticipated threat from the LTTE on Army deployments. After the 56 Division was attacked by the LTTE, our soldiers were practically re deployed in the Battalion Headquarters, and were engaged in picket duties up to the Poonewa road block. On 26th June 1999, 02 x 75 troops were attached to 212 Brigade and were deployed in the Forward Defence Line. Presently, troops of 4(V) SLAWC are deployed in Security Forces Head Quarters Wanni, 14 Division, 54 Division and Regimental Head Quarters.
