In view of the increased need for employment of woman soldiers to support their male counterparts engaged in an intensive battle with the LTTE cadres in the Eastern province, a new Battalion was added to the Corps of Women in the Sri Lanka Army, the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of Women’s Corps on 15th November 1997.

A land belonged to the Mahaweli Authority was taken over by the Army on 23rd January 1998 and construction of the Headquarters was commenced on 27th January 1998, which was ceremonially opened on 13th July 1998, at Dehiattakandiya.
The Battalion consisted of 11 Officers and 701 Other Ranks at the inception. Initial composition was made by both new recruits and those who were transferred from 2(V) SLAWC, which was the only Volunteer Women’s Corps functioning at that time.
In addition to the operational duties mentioned above, the 3(V) SLAWC soldiers performed as clerks and computer operators at Army Headquarters as well as other higher formation Headquarters.
A considerable no of soldiers have joined various sports pools and have brought fame to the Army as well as to the country, participating in both National and International sports festivals.
So far nine Officers have commanded the Battalion. Lieutenant Colonel DDA Krishantha 2(V) SLASC, is the present Commanding Officer. Founder of the Battalion was Major MWCJK Senavirathna SLAWC.
