Sri Lanka Army steered the last rites of late Major General WJTK Fernando (Retd) psc, the most senior retired Signal Officer who passed away on 15th December 2018. The procession of the funeral ceremony was held at 1400 hours on 17th December 2017 at the General Cemetery, Borella in Colombo with full military honors. The Military Secretary of the Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals attended representing the Commander of the Army together with a large number of Senior Officers and Other Ranks of the Army and joined the family members in sharing their sadness at this moment of grief.

Major General W J T Kamal Fernando (Retd) of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) passed away on Saturday (15) after a brief illness. He joined the Army on 21 October 1957 as a 2nd Lieutenant and retired from the Army on 1988.

Drawing a considerable gathering of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts, including overseas ones under one roof, perhaps for the first time in the Army history, the international Symposium of the Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC), themed ‘Cyberspace; Perpetual Battlefront for Future’ began its sessions at the BMICH this morning (28) after a brief inaugural ceremony, headed by HE the President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

“The soft power generated in the Cyberspace can play a vital and decisive role in the modern day battlefields. In other words, when the battlefields become automated, when the weapon systems are getting more remotely controlled, when communication systems combined with data transmissions become network centric and when the soldiers in the battlefield are equipped and fed from automated information systems of video, voice and data; we must not forget that all such systems are highly vulnerable for cyber threats,” so remarked Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

The Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals, Major General B H M A Wijesighe USP ndu psc (Chief Guest), Chief Signal Officer Major General N M Hettiarachchi USP psc Hdmc and Senior Officers of the Corps were invited to grace the occasion of the pre-dinner session.
